West Dallas / Trinity Groves Apartment Buildings

West Dallas lies just west of downtown Dallas, north of Oak Cliff and east of Irving and Grand Prairie. The city defines its boundaries as Interstate 30 on the south, the Trinity River on the east and north, and the river’s West Fork on the west. The Eagle Ford area was first settled in November 1844 by the family of Enoch Horton, who found an eagle’s nest there and named the river crossing after it; a post office opened in 1858, and Eagle Ford served as the western terminus of the Texas and Pacific Railway between 1873 and 1876. La Reunion, a Fourierist colony, was established in 1855 on a limestone ridge above the Trinity floodplain. West Dallas was annexed by the City of Dallas in 1954, and a tornado passed through the area in April 1957.

A lead smelter operated by the RSR Corporation ran for roughly five decades until 1984. The site was placed on the federal Superfund National Priorities List in 1995, and the Environmental Protection Agency assessed nearly 7,000 properties and cleaned up the yards of more than 400 of them between 1991 and 1994.

The Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge, designed by Santiago Calatrava, opened in March 2012 and links Woodall Rodgers Freeway to Singleton Boulevard across the Trinity; it is 1,206 feet long with a central arch 400 feet high. The Ronald Kirk Bridge, built between 1929 and 1932, reopened as a pedestrian crossing in June 2014. Trinity Groves sits at the western end of the Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge, and the Trinity Skyline Trail runs 4.6 miles through the floodway. No DART light rail station lies within West Dallas.
