Lakewood lies northeast of downtown Dallas beside White Rock Lake, bounded by Mockingbird Lane to the north, Abrams Road to the west, Gaston Avenue to the south and the lake to the east. Construction of White Rock Lake began in 1910 in response to a water shortage and the lake was completed in 1911, its earthen dam 47 feet high and 2,550 feet long at the crest. The reservoir covers 1,254 acres and is owned and operated by the City of Dallas. In the early 1930s the Dallas Park Board, with help from the Civilian Conservation Corps, developed the shoreline into a municipal park; a 9.33-mile trail now runs around it for walking, running and cycling. The beaches saw their last swimmers in 1952 and motorized boats were banned in 1958.
The Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden, 66 acres at 8525 Garland Road on the lake’s southeastern shore, opened in 1984. It includes the DeGolyer Estate, a 21,000-square-foot house built in 1938 and 1939 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978, and the Alex Camp House, completed in 1938. The Bath House Cultural Center on the east shore was built in 1930 and is described as one of the first Art Deco buildings in the South; it was renovated beginning in 1980 and presents exhibits, performances and workshops through the year.
The Lakewood Theater at 1825 Abrams Road opened in October 1938 with 1,100 seats and a 100-foot neon tower, and was designated a Dallas Landmark in September 2016.
