North Dallas / Preston Hollow Apartment Buildings

Preston Hollow is a neighborhood in North Dallas roughly six miles north of downtown. Its commonly used boundaries run between Midway and Hillcrest roads and between Royal Lane and Northwest Highway. Settlers began receiving land grants for the area in the 1850s, and Ralph Stichter became its first residential purchaser in the 1920s, building two estates on his property in 1922. The developer Ira P. DeLoache bought a 56-acre farm there in 1924, and the architect Charles Dilbeck designed many of the neighborhood’s larger houses through the 1930s and early 1940s. Preston Hollow incorporated as a municipality in 1939, with former Dallas mayor Joe E. Lawther as its first mayor; residents voted to join the City of Dallas in 1945, and it has been part of Dallas since.

The wider term North Dallas generally covers the parts of the city north of Northwest Highway, together with Lake Highlands and the areas north of Interstate 635 known as Far North Dallas.

Institutions in and around the neighborhood include Temple Emanu-El, founded in 1873 and on its Hillcrest Road campus since 1957; St. Mark’s School of Texas, established in 1906 on 42 acres at 10600 Preston Road; Ursuline Academy of Dallas, established in 1874; Jesuit College Preparatory School, opened in 1942; and Hillcrest High School, founded in 1938. Preston Center covers 103 acres around Preston Road and Northwest Highway, and NorthPark Center opened in 1965.
