Downtown / Farmers Market Apartment Buildings

Downtown Dallas is bounded by Interstate 345 on the east, Interstate 35E on the west, Interstate 30 on the south and Woodall Rodgers Freeway on the north. The Farmers Market District occupies its southeastern corner, south of the Main Street District and west of Deep Ellum. The Dallas Farmers Market at 920 S. Harwood Street traces to 1939, when the site was expanded and its first shed established; the city formally sanctioned it as a municipally owned market in 1941. It operates today as the Market building and the Shed, and reports hosting more than 200 small businesses and supporting over 50 Texas farms and ranches.

Landmarks in and around the district include the Harwood Historic District, designated a Dallas Landmark in 1990 and absorbed into the larger Dallas Downtown Historic District in 2009, and the Statler at 1914 Commerce Street, which opened in 1956, closed in 2001 and reopened in 2017 with 159 hotel rooms and 219 apartments on its upper eleven floors.

Public green space has expanded steadily: Main Street Garden opened in 2009, Klyde Warren Park in 2012, Pacific Plaza in 2019, and Harwood Park, nearly four acres at 408 S Harwood Street, in September 2023. The Dallas Arts District covers 118 acres at the northern edge of downtown. Six DART rail stations serve the area: Convention Center, Union, West End, Akard, St. Paul and Pearl.
