The Cedars lies directly south of downtown Dallas and Interstate 30, east of Austin Street and north of Corinth Street. It was first developed in the 1870s with modest homes and by the late nineteenth century held stately Victorian houses, serving as a center of the city’s Jewish community and home to the Shaareth Israel synagogue. Stanley Marcus of Neiman Marcus was born in the neighborhood. Most of the Victorian housing was gone by the 1920s, and in the 1960s nearly all remaining homes were cleared for highway projects, leaving perhaps six original structures standing.
Redevelopment has been underway for three decades. The Cedars TIF District was created in December 1992 across roughly 245 acres, and projects within it have added several hundred residential units along with hotel rooms and commercial space. The Cedars Area Plan, adopted in January 2002, covers about 560 acres bounded by Interstate 30, the G. & S.F. Railroad, the M.K. & T. Railroad and Interstate 45, addressing land use, zoning, urban design and transportation. A Cedars West sub-district of 355.7 acres falls within the TOD TIF District created in 2008.
Old City Park occupies the land Dallas acquired in 1876 as its first city park and holds restored structures dating from about 1840 to 1910, among them the Millermore Mansion, a general store, a train depot, a schoolhouse and a church. Dallas Police Headquarters stands on Lamar Street. Cedars Station, at Belleview and Wall streets, is served by the Red and Blue lines.
