Knox-Henderson / Lower Greenville Apartment Buildings

Knox/Henderson sits north of Uptown and east and south of the Town of Highland Park, centered on Knox Street, Henderson Avenue, McKinney Avenue and Cole Avenue. Lower Greenville lies in east Dallas west of Lakewood and covers the stretch of Greenville Avenue south of Mercedes Avenue and north of Belmont Avenue; the area south of Belmont is known as Lowest Greenville and the stretch north of Mockingbird Lane as Upper Greenville. The area straddles Dallas City Council Districts 14 and 2.

Before North Central Expressway was built in 1950, Greenville Avenue was the main route north out of Dallas toward Richardson, Plano and McKinney, and until the mid-1920s it was known as the Richardson Road or the Richardson Pike. Weir’s Furniture opened on Knox Street in 1948. Knox Street was redeveloped through the 1990s, with the original 1920s facades preserved while the interiors behind them were rebuilt.

The Granada Theater at 3524 Greenville Avenue opened in 1946 as a movie house, designed by Raymond F. Smith with a capacity of 1,000; its stage was extended in 1977 and it reopened as a concert hall in 2004. The Arcadia Theater opened on Lower Greenville in 1927 and was destroyed by fire in 2006. The Vickery Place Conservation District was approved in June 2006, and the adjoining M Streets form the Greenland Hills conservation district, where most homes date to the 1920s and many are Tudor in style. The Katy Trail runs through Knox/Henderson.
