Vickery Meadow Apartment Buildings

Vickery Meadow is in northeast Dallas. The area was originally settled by John J. and William Jenkins in the 1850s. John E. Vickery laid out and promoted a townsite in the early 1900s, a post office followed in 1912, and Dallas annexed the community in March 1945.

The neighborhood as it stands today was designed in the mid-1970s and built out in the early 1980s, originally intended for residents without children. When fully developed it held roughly 15,500 apartments and 2,300 condominiums across about 2.86 square miles. A 1988 amendment to the Fair Housing Act meant families with children could no longer be turned away, and the makeup of the area shifted through the 1990s. Immigrants and refugees from Mexico, Central America, Bosnia, Burma, Bhutan and parts of Africa settled in the apartment complexes from that period onward. The Dallas branch of the International Rescue Committee resettles close to 650 refugees in the city each year, many of them in this area, alongside Catholic Charities of Dallas and Refugee Services of Texas. The Vickery Meadow Learning Center opened in 1997 in apartment clubhouses and moved into a building of its own in 1999, offering English literacy instruction, GED preparation and citizenship study.

Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Dallas, which opened in 1966, stands in the area. The Vickery Park Branch Library opened in 2021 at 8383 Park Lane, designed and staffed to serve a community speaking more than 30 languages and dialects. The Vickery Meadow TIF District was created in April 2005 across 179.65 acres. Park Lane and Walnut Hill stations are each served by the Red and Orange lines.
